The Sudan Development Institute in Collaboration with the Deanship of Students Affairs of UMST, and the Global Conferences Center at UMST organized on the 16th of August 2021 a symposium on the latest directions on Fighting drugs and the new methods of treating addiction. The speakers were Lieutenant General professor Ahmed Awad Aljamal, Consultant of toxins, Lieutenant General/ Dr. Fatheeya Hussain Shabo (psychologist), and Rehab Hussain Shabo (founder and ex-director) of Alhayat Center for treatment of addiction. The speakers discussed issues that fall into three main tracks: Track 1: • The latest types of drugs in Sudan. • Methods of Combating drugs. • Distribution of drugs inside the universities and colleges. Track 2: • The updated developments of medical psychology in the treatment of addiction and how to deal with latest types of drugs. Track 3: • The historical background, the role,and achievement of Alhayhat Center of addiction treatment in Khartoum. • The establishment of awareness programs at the universities and colleges and the importance of following efficient methods to encourage addict students to pursue rehabilitation programs. • The importance of the role of teachers in increasing the awareness among students on the significance of combating the use of drugs. Encouraging the students’ societies at the universities and colleges to be involved in all programs of awareness. The symposium was attended by the Students, the university staff as well as guests. The discussion and the participation by the audience were fruitful, and some of the participants suggested the organization of campaigns of awareness among the student. This is because the involvement of students in these campaigns is crucial for their success. Recommendations: 1. The attendances adopted the followings recommendations: • Formation of an hoc committee. • The committee should include students. • The participation of volunteer members from other universities and colleges, and deans of students affairs should be the main members of the committee. 2. Awareness campaigns should focus at the universities and colleges. 3. The students should lead the awareness campaigns, but should get the necessary support from the student deanships at the universities and colleges. 4. The committee should emphasize the important role of educators including Lectures, Teachers, and teaching assistants (TAS) in helping drug users among the students. 5. Administrations of all universities and colleges should encourage students’ societies to engage in the campaigns of awareness. 6. The significant services provided by the rehabilitation centers should be supported by the universities and colleges. 7. Rotation of meetings at the universities and college should be scheduled. 8. The university of medical sciences and Technology was selected as the main sponsor and the leader of all programs. 9. Campaigns regarding the issues of the use of drugs among the students at various levels of education should be established.
