Dean, Faculty of Anaesthesia, Dr Mohamed Yousif Babiker
In 2004 UMST University opened the Faculty of Anaesthesia with the objective of reducing the shortage of anaesthetic personnel, especially in rural areas where the anesthetic mortality is high. The course was designed to be executed in 8 semesters to cover 40 important anesthetic and related subjects and was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education after a workshop in Jazira University attended by highly qualified anaesthetic staff.
Anaesthesia is becoming a more and more complex specialty every day. It requires a variety of technical skills in addition to the theoretical part. An anesthetic technician is the cornerstone of the anesthesia team and their role is vital so they must have extensive knowledge in the principles of basic medical sciences and anaesthesia. In addition, a technician must embrace many skills in anaesthesia practice.
Our faculty is well established in this important science and aims to produce highly qualified and safe graduates. The faculty offers BSc in Anaesthesia. Our students study for four intensive years including basic medical sciences in the first two years and anesthesia courses in the last two years. Candidates graduate as anaesthesia technologists and take part in the anaesthesia team in the operating theatre. The faculty offers a distinguished programme of advanced study and training tailored to prepare the students for a challenging and tough career in anesthesia. Our faculty has a full staff of highly educated doctors and technologist together we focus in educating and training each candidate individually in order to give our graduate full knowledge and skills.
