The Faculty of Radiological Sciences is an integral element of the UMST University. The faculty was established in 2005 to promote and upgrade the radiological sciences in Sudan in compliance with the international standards. The mission of the faculty is to provide the student with educational experience, which permits him/her to develop the competencies required to function effectively as a Radiology Specialist in the future. The faculty offers a 4 year Bachelor’s Degree (Honours) program in Radiological Sciences, as well as M.Sc. in Diagnostic Medical Imaging and M.Sc. in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound. The students receive clinical practice in all areas of medical imaging technology that includes radiography, CT, MRI, ultrasound and Interventional Radiology in a well established UMST hospitals and centers. The faculty will soon be venturing in the sphere of Post – Graduate Diploma in Echocardiography, in addition to starting other several diploma programs to meet the continuing needs of the allied health professionals in Sudan. The faculty is planning to render services and training courses to the Ministry of Health, and to participate in research as well as workshops, seminars and conferences to keep pace with the latest developments in the radiological field.
Radiological Sciences is the profession whose members have the responsibility to provide skilled technical expertise in Diagnostic X-Ray Departments. The Radiology Specialist is the professional whose role is to produce radiographs of various body parts and systems, submitting them to the radiologist for diagnostic interpretation. The graduate professionals form part of the health care team, headed by a medical doctor, and their professionalism and understanding of the care requirements make their role essential in any health care system. 1. Graduates find employment in academic hospitals, community health centers, and in private and public practices. 2. Graduates in diagnostic radiography can also start independent private practices. 3. Other opportunities include post-graduate study.
The 4 academic year (8 Semesters) course leads to a B.Sc. (Honours) in Radiological Sciences. The programme requires a minimum number of contact hours, essential for attaining the requisite professional competence. In addition to lectures, the students get extensive hands-on experience both at the university clinical x-ray departments and in clinical rotations at the Ministry of Health hospitals for practical exposure.
