UMST Public and Tropical Health Programmes Secure another Resounding Success

The Public and Tropical Health Programmes at the University of Medical Sciences and Technology celebrated another success, to add to ongoing advancements in science, medicine and education.
On Saturday the 5th batch of from the MSc in Family Medicine has graduated with flying colors to constitute a significant landmark in the highly needed specialization, not only for UMST, but for the Sudan at large.
Forty one medical doctors graduated to add to the experts in health service and to add volume and value to the personnel working in the field.
Within this specific context, External Examiners of high caliber fully participated in conducting the exams and overseeing the process. Dr Badria Abdelraheem Elfaki and Dr Yousif Elgizoli were invited from Prince Sultan Military Medical City in Ryiad KSA. And they were joined by Professor Ahmed Gasim Elzubair.
All three examiners were highly impressed with the sound knowledge of the doctors, and they commended their excellent clinical skills. They all agreed that the graduated doctors are comparable, and in some areas, exceeded doctors examined by them at different parts of the Arab World, and they confirm that they would confidently recommend them as SAFE DOCTORS.
It is worth noting that the Programmes are run under the capable management and efficient supervision of Dr Hanan Tahir.

An international conference envisaged and organized in the spirit of sharing and learning from each other, saw delegates from 110 universities and 30 organisations from around the world convened at the University of Limerick to discuss community empowerment for health. The delegates who came from a range of backgrounds gathered to discuss how to create opportunities for others within their communities, to become more informed by giving them the confidence, skills, resources, and power to shape and influence their own health.

The main outcome of the conference, according to one of the main organizers, Dr Khalifa Elmusharaf, was a Limerick declaration on community empowerment. He proceeded to emphasize that the Conference ‘declares that community empowerment goes beyond the traditional methods of listening, information sharing and consultation’.

The Conference ‘involves a change in power relations and enabling people to have more control, and responsibility, for their own health’, according to Dr Elmusharaf. And its declaration, he maintains, is a ‘call of action on educational institutes and organizations worldwide to lead the change process for community empowerment and social accountability.’

Both Dr Khalifa Elmusharaf and Dr Anca Minescu, the Assistant Dean International at the Faculty of Education and Health Science at the University of Limerick, described the Conference as ‘a resounding success’.

It is worth noting that Dr Khalifa Elmusharaf, who is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the Graduate Entry Medical School at University of Limerick is a notable graduate of UMS.

Immunization of HBSAG (-Ve) Children in Eid Babiker (Khelwa)

Hepatitis B virus is the main cause of chronic liver infection. More than 65 million people are infected worldwide; In Sudan the prevalence is about 8%.
UMST, in collaboration with Ibn Sina Hospital, is carrying a campaign to vaccinate all children at Ed Babiker Khelwa who are negative for Hepatitis B virus with the vaccines. The number of pupils at Ed Babiker Khelwa is around 1200 pupils, and their age ranges from 6 years to 23 years; they are mainly from Darfur states.
A questionnaire was designed for the pupils showing the history of previous infection and jaundice in siblings or parents.
Blood samples are collected (Sera) and examined for (HBSAG) – if the result is positive, the children will be referred to Ibn Sina Hospital for management with follow up.
Those who are seronegative will be vaccinated by HBV vaccine.
