A high profiled delegation from the embassy of the Republic of South Sudan visited UMST on Thursday 29/01/2015. The team included Dr Makur Kariam, undersecretary, Dr Gabriel Deng Akot Dendit, a diplomat, Dr Moses Deng Malual Director General of Pharmaceuticals and Medicines supplies, Dr Lul Lojok Deng, Director General of Public Health Laboratories. The delegation was met by UMST President, Academic Secretary, Dean Graduate College, Dean Faculty of Medicine, Director of Public Health and the Deputy Dean Faculty of Anaesthesia.
The mission of the delegation was to seek collaboration between the Ministry of Health in South Sudan and UMST regarding training students in different areas, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The visitors were received and welcomed by Prof. Younis Mohamed Elhassan Younis, the General Director of the Institute and the technical personnel of the laboratories. During their tour through the laboratories, vouchers were distributed among them, while the Director gave swift talk on the mission and objectives of the Institute and the four Units associated with it. He also explained the functions of each of the high-tech instruments and the analytical services they provide. The visitors have also been involved in conversations with the director, researchers and the technical personnel of the Institute. The conversations involved different kinds of academic topics and research issues. In response to their wish to initiate a collaborator research link, the Director has assured the readiness of the Institute to provide assistance of the know-how and laboratory facilities for collaboration in research issues such as:
- Research projects in: The isolation and identification of medicinal plants chemical constituents, (Natural Products Chemistry).
- Research projects in: The safety of herbal preparations.
- Research projects: Identification and estimation of the levels of air pollutants in oil fields and refineries.
- Estimation of precious minerals in rocks and soils.
