The Deanship of Scientific Research in cooperation with the Sudan Institute for Education and Development
organized a workshop on sampling techniques and sample size determination on: Thursday, 29/03/2018. The workshop was attended by 24 faculty members who supervise under-graduates research. The various sampling techniques used for scientific and social research were described. The different types of probability and non-probability sampling were reviewed. The characteristics, benefits and critical issues for each type of sampling were explained and discussed. The importance of the sample size determination was explained indicating that it is the critical issue of the research proposal. The small samples produce unreliable results, while large samples require considerable effort, time and money. The sample size is directly related to the margin error of the study. The various methods of calculating the sample and were discussed through various set examples and tests.
